Between the 8 – 17 September, Heritage Open Days celebrates our fantastic history and culture. Many heritage attractions open their doors and offer free events and activities, to highlight the amazing variety of fascinating places to discover. Here in the Lake District, Cumbria, there’s plenty to explore! Here are just a few of the Heritage Open Days events taking place across the county - check out what's on here.


Cumbria Crystal

Cumbria Crystal

Head to Cumbria Crystal in Ulverston to discover the last luxury crystal maker in the UK. See pieces being made from their free factory viewing platform, open daily from 9am – 4pm throughout the year. On Wednesday 13 September, learn more about Cumbria Crystal at talks by Cumbria Crystal’s CEO, held at 11am and 2pm.

National Trust for Heritage Open Days

The National Trust are celebrating Heritage Open Days at several of their sites across Cumbria. From tours of Steam Yacht Gondola on Coniston water, to a mini vintage caravan rally at Fell Foot; a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Townend to a guided walk of the Whitehaven coast, there’s plenty to enjoy.


Hawkshead Grammar School

Hawkshead Grammar School

On 10, 14 and 15 September, Hawkshead Grammar School – once attended by William Wordsworth – is offering guided tours into one of the few remaining historic school libraries which remains in-situ, in the school building it was set up in. Usually closed to the public, it’s a unique opportunity to see inside this fascinating library – which is home to around 1600 books, some dating back to the 16th century!


Ulverston Parish Church

Ulverston Parish Church

In the market town of Ulverston, the parish church will be celebrating its community and history with a Heritage Open Day event on Saturday 9 September, around the theme of ‘Creativity Unwrapped’. Titled 'Piecing the Pars: People, Pastimes & Puzzles', there will be everything from children’s activities to heritage displays, and even the chance to ring the church bells.


Barrow Town Hall

On the 15 and 16 September, Barrow Town Hall will be opening its doors to the public between 11am – 3pm. Explore rooms like the Queen’s Hall, Council Chamber, Banqueting Hall and Mayor’s Parlour, and get a glimpse into the history of this Grade II listed building.


Tullie House Carlisle

Discover historic Carlisle at Tullie House, with events for all the family. On Saturday 16 September, tour Old Tullie House with its former occupants, Mr and Mrs Dixon – who lived here in the 1800s. You can also meet a Roman soldier, and enjoy craft activities for children. There are also walking tours of Carlisle, taking in Carlisle Castle and Carlisle Cathedral.

Discover over 900 years of history at Carlisle Cathedral. On Saturday 16 September, the Prior’s Tower will be open to view (it’s usually only open on special occasions) – be sure to look up to admire its Tudor painted ceiling. There will also be special bell tower tours, which offer the chance to see the Cathedral’s beautiful blue starry ceiling up close; and a children’s activity on the day.


Birdoswald Roman Fort

Walk in the footsteps of the Romans with a walking tour from Birdoswald Roman Fort to Gilsland village. Discover fascinating Roman sites along this stretch of Hadrian's Wall; and hear more about the area’s rich history thanks to the knowledgeable volunteer guides who will lead the way. Tours will take place on the 8, 11, 12 and 13 September at 1pm.


Armitt Museum

Armitt Museum

Ambleside’s Armitt Museum will be opening its doors to celebrate Heritage Open Days on 14 September, 10am – 5pm. Learn more about some of the remarkable women associated with the Lake District, like Beatrix Potter and Charlotte Mason; and take part in ‘walk & talk’ (booking required) which includes a trip to Ambleside’s iconic Bridge House.


Farfield Mill

Farfield Mill

Set within a fully restored Victorian woollen mill overlooking the river, Sedbergh’s Farfield Mill is celebrating Heritage Open Days with stories from the past. Learn more about the local area’s textiles heritage, see power and handweaving looms, visit artist’s studios, and more. There are heritage displays telling the story of the Mill, and a children’s trail for younger visitors to enjoy.


Quaker Tapestry Museum

Quaker Tapestry

At Kendal’s Quaker Tapestry Museum, two new exhibitions will be highlighted with talks by curatorial assistant Francesca Vine during the Heritage Open Days. Visit on 15 and 16 September for an insight into ‘Places of Science’, which explores John Dalton’s connection to Kendal and the Lakes; and Quaker Simplicity, which explores the evolution of the Quaker testimony of simplicity.
