The Lake District, Cumbria is all about being kind to the earth. It’s fitting too, as the Lake District is where the modern conservation movement was born - and conservation is one of the key pillars that led to the Lake District National Park being awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017.
Green transport, including an excellent local network of buses and trains, is at the heart of a Lake District experience, and even if you want to go it alone you can do it in an eco-friendly way: on foot, two wheels, with a pair of oars in your hand or behind the wheel of an electric car.
The region is dotted with carbon-neutral accommodations including eco-lodges and cottages that use water from private wells, ground-source heat pumps for underfloor heating and wind-generated electricity.
Cumbria and the Lake District are also the ideal destination for a green wedding, with lots of eco-friendly options from wildflower bouquets to locally sourced, organic food for the reception and – of course – local beers served at bar.
When planning your sustainable stay, check out these sustainable travel offers and our ideas for great ways of exploring the county in a sustainable way during your stay with our sustainable travel itineraries, sustainable and fun days out and 'Rail Trails' - walks that are all easily within reach of local railway stations.
See below for some of the accommodation options offering greener holidays and check out the list further down the page, with places to stay and attractions that have received a green tourism award.
