Ply-split braiding is an innovative textile technique, a kind of off-loom weaving where high-twist cords go through the centre of, or are split by, other cords. From its origins in northwest India, rooted in the making of exquisite camel girths, it has developed in the west as a contemporary craft, sitting somewhere between braiding, weaving and basketmaking, open to countless possibilities.
This two-day workshop is an introduction to ply-splitting, and gives a good grounding in the key 'stitches' or 'weaves' that are used. We start simply and build gradually, making braids, small mats and projects – these are things to refer back to in the future should you wish to take things further.
