Travel by Train

Cumbria is a great place to travel around by train. The county has some of the most picturesque train routes in the UK. Sit back, relax and enjoy the view of the majestic Lake District mountains, then marvel at the beautiful wide expanse of sea as the train takes you along the beautiful coastal line, which crosses several estuaries and in parts travels as close to the coast as can be.

Train Routes into Cumbria

West Coast Main Line

The main North-South main line route between London & Glasgow travels the whole length of Cumbria and enables direct access from the North and South. Ideal hop off points with connecting lines are Carlisle station in the North of the county, Penrith for North Lakes, Oxenholme for South Lakes and Carnforth for the south coast of Cumbria.

Hadrian's Wall Country Line

Approaching Cumbria from Newcastle and the North East, this line arrives in the north of Cumbria at Carlisle station, where you can then get connecting routes tothe West of the county, Central Lakeland or Settle & Carlisle to the East of the county.

Settle to Carlisle Railway

This famous line runs from Leeds via Settle and through Cumbria's Eden Valley to Carlisle. Often described as one of the most picturesque stretches of railway in the UK.

The Lakes Line

This lovely short line takes you from the mainline station at Oxenholme, South Lakes, into the heart of the Lake District at Windermere, passing through the town of Kendal and villages of Burneside and Staveley.

The Furness Line

A real gem of a route - this line starts at Lancaster, and then through the famous railway town of Carnforth before quickly arriving in Cumbria, first travelling through the Arnside and Silverdale area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) before going over the first of several estuary viaducts at Arnside. It then continues along the estuary side, crossing further estuaries and passing through Grange-over-sands, Kents, Bank, Cark & Cartmel, the busy market town of Ulverston, Dalton and Barrow-in-Furness.

The Cumbrian Coast Line

This scenic railway line links Barrow-in-Furness in the South of the county with Carlisle in the North. Passing along the coast and throguh the western lake District, this line includes superb coastal views with a backdrop of lakes and mountains.
