Carlisle – City Sights and Shopping

It’s easy to see why people choose Carlisle as a great place to visit - from the Romans in the first century, to the legions that now arrive for a short break or longer holiday. In the beautiful and historic heart of Carlisle, City of the Lakes, you can stroll from the castle to the cathedral to Tullie House Museum - surrounded by great places to shop, eat and be entertained.



9.00am (1.5 hours duration) – Guided walk through Carlisle City Centre, taking in the Guildhall Museum, our friendly city centre and Victorian Crown Court, on the site of the Citadel.

10.30am (1 hour duration) – Carlisle Cathedral shows the peaceable face of Carlisle’s past. Its 14th century stained glass window and magnificent ceiling looked down on the marriage of Sir Walter Scott and his French born bride.

11.30pm (2 hour duration) – All the threads of Carlisle’s colourful life and times are woven together dramatically in the displays of the award-winning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is Carlisle's finest visitor attraction, and houses considerable collections of fine and decorative art, human history and natural sciences.



1.30pm (1 hour duration) – Lunch in the Garden Restaurant,Tullie House.

The museum has an award-winning, family friendly restaurant that serves hot and cold food all day.



2.30pm (1 hour duration) – Leave Tullie House by the underground Millennium Walkway and arrive at Carlisle Castle. The symbol of Carlisle’s strategic importance is the castle. Founded by William the Conqueror’s son, William Rufus in 1092 and once a prison for Mary Queen of Scots, it is still the home of the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment.

3.30pm (2 hour duration) – Shopping time!! Carlisle has a vast array of choice that would delight and dazzle you in a city twice the size – all contained in one of the most compact and visitor friendly city centre’s in the country. Visit The Lanes, the region’s premier shopping centre and the refurbished Victorian Market Hall. Enjoy refreshments at one of the city centres many cosmopolitan cafés.

5.30pm – Leave for hotel or home.
