Leave pier 3, Bowness on Windermere at 10:00 on the boat to Ferry House. Catch the 10:20 bus to Hawkshead. Spend 1 1/2 hours in this charming and picturesque village, with its connections to William Worsdworth and Beatrix Potter. The centre of the village is closed to through traffic, which makes it a pleasure to explore and browse in the shops. If you wish to take home a taste of the Lake District then visit the Hawkshead Relish shop and pick up one of their delicious chutneys, relishes, jams or marmalades.
From Hawkshead hop on the X30, departing at 12:00, to Wray Castle. Not your typical National Trust property, but one that although a little 'tired' shows plenty of signs of its varied and grand history. National Trust offer a free guided tour to help you understand the castles full life story. You will receive 10% off the admission price if you arrive by the Cross Lakes Bus.


Hawkshead has flourished from its beginnings as a Medieval market town. Today Hawkshead, with its car-free village centre, is the perfect place for the visitor to experience the 'real' Lake District. This small village has a magical feel!

Wray Castle is a mock-gothic Castle, on the western shore of Windermere. Empty of original furniture, this is a place for all the family to enjoy.



Have lunch in the cafe at Wray Castle. Its open daily, during the season, serving snacks and hot and cold drinks.


Stroll back along the western shore of Windermere to Ferry House. This walk will take approximately 1 1/2 hours, at a gentle pace, and offers stunning scenery and an every changing vista of Windermere. If you wish to extend this walk, you can by taking a detour over Claife Heights. This will give you magnificent views of the lakes on varied and easy forest trails and takes about 2 1/2 hours.
Please remember if you wish to do the longer walk the last boat from Ferry House to Bowness on Windermere leaves at 16:20 during the winter months.


Situated at the heart of the Lake District, Windermere is England's longest lake and most well known.
