Castle, mountains and mirrored lake.

Spend a day in the Ullswater Valley, calling in at a unique visitor centre and soaking up the dramatic mountain views aboard an Ullswater “Steamer”. Visit the Rheged Centre, where you will fly over lakes and mountains, watching 'Rheged - the Movie' on a gigantic cinema screen. Spend some time exploring the superb gift shops and enjoy a delicious lunch.

 

Morning

MINIATURES, MOUNTAINS AND A MIRRORED LAKE

10.00am (1.5 hours duration) – Visit Lowther Castle and Gardens. Lowther Castle has been the family seat of the Earls of Lonsdale from time immemorial, and occupies the site of mansions dating back to the reign of Edward I. The gardens and castle at Lowther lay abandoned for 70 years and in 2011 opened for the first time since 1938. Visitors can follow routes through the 130 acres of gardens and castle terraces. Free parking with dedicated coach parking area.

(15 minute duration) - Travel from Lowther Castle & Gardens to Rheged along A6/A66
 

Lunch

11.45am (2.25 hours duration (inc lunch) – Visit Rheged Centre. Rheged is a visitor attraction with nine artisan shops, three cafes serving deliciously fresh food, and a fantastic 3D cinema screen showing a diverse range of films to suit all our customers. Rheged is also home to a superb craft and gift shops, Artists' exhibitions and offers free coach parking, entry to the building and disabled access to all levels. An all-weather attraction with free entry and free coach parking.

(15 minutes duration) Travel from Rheged to Ullswater along A592

 

Afternoon

2.00pm (steamers depart at 2.30pm) (2 hours duration) – Cruise on Ullswater. The fells and mountains mirrored in Ullswater are beautiful from whichever angle they are viewed, but from on-board the Ullswater Steamers, they are simply stunning. Some of the most spectacular views of Helvellyn and the Ullswater Valley cannot be seen from the shore, only from the Lake. Ullswater Steamers have been serving both locals and visitors around the lake since 1859, carrying mail and provisions as well as passengers. They run services all year round between Glenridding, Pooley Bridge and Howtown, and have on board light refreshments. On deck seating is complemented by warm indoor saloons for the more unpredictable turns of the weather! Coaches can drop off at Pooley Bridge Pier and meet group in Glenridding where there is free coach parking.

4.30pm - Leave for home or hotel.
