Autumn colours of Tarn Hows

Stroll beside Tarn Hows, potter around Hawkshead on a car-free and stress-free day out.
Nb. Bus X30 runs Saturdays, Sundays and every day in half term (29th October to 2nd November) If you have a concessionary pass you can use it for free travel on both of these bus services.



Climb aboard Stagecoach bus service 505 from Ambleside (Kelsick Road) at 10:25am and enjoy the scenery as the bus carries you to the pretty village of Hawkshead. Enjoy a leisurely morning looking around the village or visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery to see original paintings from her famous books and more.


Hawkshead has flourished from its beginnings as a Medieval market town. Today Hawkshead, with its car-free village centre, is the perfect place for the visitor to experience the 'real' Lake District. This small village has a magical feel!

This unique gallery space occupies the charming 17th century building which once served as the office of Beatrix Potter's solicitor husband, in the centre of Hawkshead village.



Hawkshead has a selection of pubs and tea shops from you to choose from depending on your tastes.


At 14:05pm hop on bus service X30 (Kirkby Lonsdale Coach Hire) to the famous beauty spot of Tarn Hows where you can enjoy the easy level walk around the tarn, enjoying the views, which are particularly colourful in the autumn. Catch the X30 back to Hawkshead at either 15:10pm or 16:35pm (depending on how long you wish to spend at Tarn Hows) then after a quick coffee break in Hawkshead catch the 505 back to Ambleside at 16:05pm or 17:05pm
