Historic House

Allan Bank

Allan Bank

Make yourself comfortable in the former home of National Trust Founder, Canon Rawnsley. Only partially restored and decorated, this isn’t a typical National Trust experience. Grasmere’s valley unfolds from the picture windows and woodland grounds. Secret hideaways like the Victorian viewing tunnel create an air of mystery. You could have something to eat in the homely kitchen, watch red squirrels as you read by the fire or picnic on the lawn, write on the walls, dig the garden, paint and draw. William Wordsworth was inspired here – and there’s even more to discover today. Note: no parking on site. Follow directions from Miller Howe Café in centre of village, 450 yards

Eating and shopping:

Light lunches, snacks and tasty cakes are available from the kitchen. Picnics welcome in the gardens. Church Stile shop in Grasmere selling unusual gifts, local books and maps.

Making the most of your day:

Indoors - Drawing and painting, board games and children’s activities. Mountaineering books in the Mountain Heritage Library. Outdoors – Deckchairs on the lawn, woodland trail and walks. Off-road cycle trail along Grasmere lakeshore. Safe cycle storage at Church Stile shop.
