Blackwell, The Arts & Craft House

John Harden (1772-1847) was an accomplished amateur artist who lived in the Lake District from 1804 until his death. Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, he inherited his father’s property and land at an early age. This allowed him to pursue his own interests in art and music and travel at leisure.

The brilliantly-executed drawings in this display, made less than 100 years before Blackwell was built as a holiday retreat for the Holt family, provide a uniquely fascinating and entertaining insight into the everyday lives of leisure that the Hardens and their acquaintances shared on the shores of Windermere and inside their homes in Ambleside and Edinburgh.

Entry to exhibition is included with house admission.
