- The Best Bacon Butty in Cumbria!

Who doesn't love a bacon butty? Cumbrian Author Paul Kendall does! So much so, that he has written a book about them!

In June 2019, Paul set out on a quest to find the best bacon butty in Cumbria, with the plan to combine a walk or attraction with the catering establishments selected.

His tasting experience was undertaken without the knowledge of the caterers.
He deliberately avoided the honeypots of the central Lake District, in an attempt to encourage visitors to explore the hidden, and often overlooked, corners of Cumbria.

As the quest progressed the importance of the bacon butty was overtaken by the hidden secrets that Cumbria could provide.

He has uncovered a rich and curious history of Cumbria, which, for a long time, has been hidden from view.

He has discovered how to become a Knight of Piel Island, and how to check whether your relatives were once murderous lawless Reivers. He also found a 2.7 metre high sculpture of a man and his dog on Silloth promenade, not far from where trainee pilots crashed 17 planes during the war and a 17ft giant that roamed around Cumbria. In addition there are many medieval castles and Roman forts to explore, and wonderful nature reserves devoid of humans.

Read this fascinating book - part food review and part travelogue, to discover a Cumbria different to that of Ruskin, Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Cumbria awaits. The aim of this book is to help you get out and about, and explore this beautiful and intriguing county.

Paul Kendall is a Cumbrian Author, living in Penrith.
