Winter Skills

Winter opens up another skill set and experience needed to get from A to B safely. The Lakes in winter is beautiful. Depending on the snow levels for the particular year, we will hopefully run the course from the Lakes, but more often than not we operate from the Scottish highlands, as it’s generally far more reliable for snowfall. The Location depends obviously on the weather and where the snow is at the time.

A two-day basic winter skills course covers: Using the boot as a tool, step cutting and kicking steps. Ice axe arresting, snow belays, crampon use, moving on steep ground and snow shelters. In a nutshell everything you need to get out with confidence and enjoy the white stuff when it’s around!

- Use of crampons and ice axe
- Weather and the elements
- Ice axe arresting
- Moving onto ‘steeper’ terrain
- Use of a rope in winter, and winter belays
- Snow pack and what it means
- Snow holing

All our activities are run by passionate experienced and fully qualified and certified instructors. We are a small organisation based in the south Lakes area and have many years experience working with a huge range of clients and ability levels. The AMI (Association of Mountaineering Instructors) logo represents quality and assurance in the outdoor field, and you know that you’ll be getting the ‘best of the best’ instructors when you book with us.
