Swarthmoor Hall

Swarthmoor Hall

Details

Swarthmoor Hall is a 16th Century country house (circa 1586) set in beautiful gardens and grounds in 130 acres of farmland, with views to neighbouring fells and close to the bustling market town of Ulverston. Visitors comment on its sense of place – of the people who have lived here, its tranquillity and beauty. It is known as the cradle of Quakerism because, in the mid 1600's Judge Thomas Fell and his wife Margaret provided protection and hospitality for early Quakers, notably George Fox (the founder of the Quaker movement) and allowed the Hall to become the Quaker movement's headquarters at that time.
There are six historic rooms to view. They house a fine selection of 17th Century furniture as well as items associated with early Quaker history. Why not come and find out more?

The Hall is open for day visitors Monday to Thursday 1.30 - 4.30pm, (last admissions 4pm) from Monday 25 February 2013 to Thursday 31 October 2013 (and for group tours at other times by appointment).
Audio guides are provided for self-guided tours or a guide for larger groups.
Our tradition of hospitality remains – we offer tea/coffee and a biscuit as part of the entrance fee to the house.

Visitors are also welcome to enjoy our beautiful gardens which are open every day where they can sit, relax and picnic or take a stroll in our wildflower meadow.
We look forward to welcoming you!
