Southwaite Green offers a new way to experience a Lake District holiday. Situated on the edge of the National Park with stunning views of the western fells, this development combines quality and comfort in four cottages which also incorporate the latest in green technologies.

Nestled in the peace and tranquillity of the Vale of Lorton lies idyllic Southwaite Green.This hidden gem of four eco cottages is set against a backdrop of spectacular Western Lakeland scenery. The picturesque setting appeals to everyone and to all interests. The quieter Western Lakes of Loweswater, Buttermere, Crummock, Ennerdale and the winner of Britain’s best view Wastwater with rugged mountains, fells and sandy coastline offer an abundance of outdoor pursuits on the doorstep. The bustling towns ofCockermouth (2 miles) home to Wordsworth House,(birthplace of Dorothy and William Wordsworth) Jennings Brewery and nearby The Lakes Distillery whilst Keswick (12 miles) has the famous Theatre by the Lake on the shores of Derwentwater. Both offer a wealth of shops ,inns, restaurants, museums, art galleries and parks.


For those who want to capture the peaceful ambience that is Southwaite Green, the four award winning cottages sit on the Paddle Beck boundary of the National Park (now an UNESCO World Heritage Site) which flows through the 10 acres of organically maintained native woodland, wildflower meadow, orchards, arboretum and pond. It is a haven for wildlife including foxes, badgers, roe deer, hares, red squirrels, hedgehogs, buzzards, barn owl, heron and kingfisher which can be observed either from the summer house or the secluded seating areas.


Southwaite Green cottages were constructed in 2007 to a very high standard by the owner who lives in the grounds. The development built on traditional Lake District lines combine spacious comfort and style with environmental technologies and give a unique experience demonstrating that sustainability and luxury can be combined.


Local craftsmen using local timber and stone from the site and recycling original beams from the barns have retained the traditional character. The cottages have used green design and technologies, ground and air source heat pumps power underfloor heating beneath the slate and oak floors. Solar panels generate both electricity and hot water whilst a reed bed to deal with waste water. Each cottage has been furnished with organic wool mattresses, organic bedding, towels, handmade furniture from sustainable sources and decorated using eco friendly paint.


The owner has paid great attention to detail which is a testament to the highly acclaimed Gold Award from the Green Tourism Scheme to ensure that the cottages have a low carbon footprint and that your stay is both enjoyable and memorably different.


The development briefly comprises of Esther’s Barn which has two ground floor bedrooms each with en suite shower. One witha double, one with twin (can be made into super king size) beds. The open plan living, kitchen and dining area is on the first floor and it has a log burning stove. There is a decked patio with garden furniture (in season) and views over the countryside.


Likewise Skiddaw has two ground floor bedrooms each with en suite shower. One with a double and one with twin (can be made into super king size) beds The open plan living, kitchen and dining area is on the first floor and it has a snug are built into the traditional barn doors, which overlooks the courtyard and out towards the Western Fells. There is a decked patio with garden furniture (in season) and panoramic views.


Buttermere has been specially adapted for disabled use and is a ground floor two double bedroom (one has wheelchair turning space) cottage. It has a wet room with walk in shower with pull down seat and disabled facilities. The open plan living, kitchen and dining area comprises ofakitchen which has a lower level work surface for wheelchair users, a log burning stove in the living area with full length windows. There is a terrace with garden furniture (in season) overlooking the beck which enjoys views of the arboretum and surrounding countryside. Parking outside the front door with reversing space is available.


Beckside has a ground floor twin bedroom. The single beds can be joined together (as can the mattresses) to make a super king size bed. There is a bathroom with bath and separate shower. The open plan living, kitchen and dining area features a fireplace built with stone and timber from the original barn and has log burning stove. Stairs built into the traditional barn door lead up to the galleried landing where the twoking size bedrooms with dressing area and en suite shower rooms are located. Outside there is a terrace with garden furniture (in season) overlooking the beck with Lakeland views.


Single folding beds will fit in Skiddaw, Esther’s Barn and Buttermere for an extra charge of £35 per bed per week.


You can book more than one of our cottages at a time for a family or group holiday. In total, there is sleeping capacity for up to 20 people.


All four cottages have free Wi Fi.


Children of all ages are welcome and we can provide cots, high chairs and stair gates.


Southwaite Green is pet friendly. Well behaved dogs are allowed and they will love to explore the 10 acres of enclosed landscaped grounds. Please remember that this is sheep country and you will need to keep the dog under control at all times. There is an extra charge of £3 per pet per day. Water and feeding bowls can be provided. Please can you pick up after your dog and ensure that they are kept off the furniture.


Short breaks are available all the year round.

Smoking is not permitted in any of the cottages. No naked flames are allowed in any of the cottages.


We will be donating 10% of all profits to projects which support sustainable development in poorer countries.
