Take the train to Carlisle, the one stop shop for History, culture and retail therapy.

The great border city could not be easier to reach by train. This railway hub is on the West Coast Mainline from London to Glasgow with connections to the breathtaking Cumbrian Coast line and the world famous Settle and Carlisle railway.

Carlisle Cathedral

All great cities must have a Cathedral and Carlisle’s dates back to 1133 and is just a couple of minutes on foot from the station. The city is overlooked by the ruins of a 900-year-old castle which has been presiding over the city during many historic battles involving the Scottish border.

Carlisle really does have it all. If you are a shopaholic your flexible friend is going to get quite the workout. The brilliant Lanes Shopping Centre is just tottering distance from the railway station. You’ll find every high street name you can think of plus a tempting array of independent shops, cafes and restaurants.

If you fancy soaking up some culture the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is a must. You can take your time to appreciate the fine art on display or check out the wide range of exhibitions and events happening throughout the year.

Carlisle - Bitts Park


It’s easy to forget you are in a city centre when you are surrounded by an explosion of colour from the rhododendrons or meditating to the gentle sound of a river flowing. You are in Bitts Park, a tranquil retreat within the heart of the city. Although this space is not always a haven for peace and quiet as Bitts Park plays host to some world class concerts. Madness, Jess Glynn and Little Mix have all graced the stage recently.

Carlisle is perfect for a day trip or a longer stay, there is bags to do. Forget the hassle of the car and travel to the great border city by train.
