4. To the north you’ll find the broad slopes of Skiddaw and Blencathra which stand apart from the main Lakeland fells, each commanding sweeping views north to the Scottish border. By travelling a little further afield it is possible to visit some of the region’s other celebrated lakes. Beautiful Ullswater is lined with colourful woodland and dominated by the famous summit of Helvellyn.

Edge of the Lake District

5. The small town of Sedbergh, now famed as England’s “book town”, has something of a mixed identity. Part of Cumbria, and only 30 minutes’ drive from the edge of the Lake District, it was once part of North Yorkshire and lies in the northwest corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

6. From HF Holidays base; Thorns Hall, leased to HF Holidays by the National Trust, the town of Sedbergh is ideally located to enjoy the mellow valleys of the Dales and the untamed Cumbrian and North Pennine fells. Above Sedbergh are the bold rolling hills of the Howgills. Seen by millions of drivers from the M6 motorway, this large massif of hills sits in the shadow of its larger Lake District neighbours and is visited by few walkers. A sense of peace and tranquillity can be enjoyed by those who walk these long grassy ridges.

7. Further north is the wonder of High Cup Nick overlooking the Eden Valley, where you can walk amongst the North Pennine fells and visit the towns of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. Close by is Dentdale, a rural valley of farms and fields and the quaint cobbled village of Dent. Further afield is beautiful Wensleydale, with the impressive Hardraw Force waterfalls and the popular market town of Hawes. More challenging routes follow part of the Pennine Way or ascend to the top of Whernside or Ingleborough, two of the famous Yorkshire ‘Three Peaks’.

Southern Lake District

8. “All Lakeland is exquisitely beautiful, the Southern Fells just happen to be a bit of heaven fallen upon the earth” said Wainwright.
