A self-catering cottage in Windermere is a prime location for soaking up the best of the Lake District. You'll find Windermere a perfect base for exploring the rest of the Lake District, and a delightful Lakeland village to enjoy during your stay. The village is just off the A591, the main route to the heart of the Lakes, and is less than half an hour from the M6. Windermere also has a train station right at the centre of the village.

In Windermere you'll find a high-class Booths supermarket, stocked with fine local produce and daily essentials. The headquarters of Lakeland Ltd is a must for anyone who likes to get creative in the kitchen. Windermere high street has a traditional butcher and a selection of shops selling local produce. A clutch of pubs in the village serve good hearty food and Lakeland ales. There is also a selection of tasty cafes for breakfast out and excellent Lake District restaurants.

Just a walk or short taxi ride away, the bustling village of Bowness nestles on the eastern shores of Lake Windermere. Hire boats and row boats bob on the water in Bowness Bay, while Windermere Lake Cruises depart regularly to Ambleside and Lakeside. The cruises offer buffet meals and live music during summer evening cruises.

Wonderful walks begin from Windermere and nearby, including to the spectacular viewpoint at Orrest Head - the first Lakeland summit visited by Alfred Wainwright or follow the nearby footpath to the shores of Windermere at Millerground. You're also only a few miles from Staveley, where you can start a number of stunning walks into the Kentmere Valley, but a scenic drive will also take you to Ambleside, Coniston, the Langdale Valley or Grasmere, home to some of the most memorable walking routes in the Lake District National Park.
