This morning‘s programme not only progresses our theme of music from 1918 states, with Haydn representing Austria and Farkas Hungary, but also looks at composers taking earlier music, be it traditional or folk (Farkas, Patterson) or baroque (Berkeley), or reflecting on earlier times (Ibert, Milhaud) and giving them a fresh coat of paint... and a work itself used as inspiration – the Divertimento, or Feldpartita, ascribed to Haydn (but more likely by his pupil Pleyel) was the basis of Brahms‘s Variations on a theme of Haydn. It also introduces three composers who are features of our 2018 programming: Michael Berkeley, in celebration of his 70th birthday this year; Stephen Dodgson; and Jean Françaix.
