Discover the Vikings at The Beacon Museum

Discover the Vikings at The Beacon Museum

This summer, the Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is proud to host a unique collaboration that spans a continent. An exclusive Viking themed exhibition opens for the summer, from 29 June until 29 September, Discover the Vikings is set to delight locals and tourists alike. This unique combination of artefacts, replicas and digital interactives unearths the north of England’s rich Norse heritage.
Discover the Vikings is a combination of two of the touring exhibitions, Valhalla and Heroes, presented by The JORVIK Group, the team behind the award-winning JORVIK Viking Centre based in York.
Within the exhibition, Valhalla explores life and death in Viking Britain through 1,000-year-old artefacts and a replica boat dressed for a ship burial. In Heroes, learn what the archaeological evidence can reveal about this heroic age through human remains bearing the battle injuries of a warrior. Step inside a Viking tent for the full atmospheric experience, smells and all.
Also as part of the Beacon Museum static exhibition we have a vital clue in the Norse story of west Cumbria. Recent studies on the Beckermet Norse hoard have revealed that the silver ingots found in 2014 originated from across mainland Europe, even containing traces of Islamic dirham coins; proof if any is needed that the region was connected to a global network of Norse trading.
The Beacon Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday (Mondays during school holidays) 10:00am until 4:30pm and Sundays 11:00am until 4:00pm.
Admission is £6.50 per adult, £5.25 per concessions, £3.25 per child, (under 3s go free) and £16.50 for a family (2 adults and 2 children)
Discover the Vikings is suitable for visitors of all ages. For further details, events, workshops and related activities please see online at or on Facebook.
