The Art Of The Piano

The Art Of The Piano

Marianne Bailey - Speaker
Bobby Chen - Piano

A rare opportunity to glean from piano tuner and technician Marianne Bailey some fascinating insights about the inner workings of a piano, and some of the daily challenges she faces in setting up instruments for a concert performance.

There’ll be a short Q&A before brilliant Malaysian pianist Bobby Chen takes to the stage in the second half with a dynamic programme finely balanced between contemporary and classical works, including a UK première by renowned Malaysian composer Taljuddin, as well as a 1992 work by Scottish composer John McLeod. Haydn’s C major Sonata will refresh the aural palette, followed by Busoni’s lavishly-textured arrangement of Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin. Almost as an afterthought, Schumann’s Widmung will inevitably tug at the heart-strings. Unmissable!

Marianne Bailey - A day in the life of a concert piano technician

Taljuddin - Meditasi Lagu dalam Mimpi (Meditation Song in a Dream - UK Premiere)
Cant - Turning the Tide
McLeod - Three Protest Pieces
Haydn - Sonata in C Major Hob.XVI:50
Bach-Busoni - Chaconne in D minor BWV.1004
Schumann-Liszt - Widmung from Myrthen Op.25
