Traditional Mummers' play by Furness Morris

Traditional Mummers' play by Furness Morris

Come and enjoy a local traditional mummers' play and watch some Morris dancing.

Easter Pache Egg Play. Performed by Furness Morris

The play is a synopsis of plays that were performed in many of the Furness villages in previous times (late 19th/early 20th Century). Basically it is in the form of most traditional Spring mumming plays; a short, fairly humorous play on the theme of death/rebirth, with a fight between good and evil. The characters include Lord Nelson, Saint George, and Evil Knight and a quack Doctor. It is suitable for all ages. There is no charge, but a hat will be passed round.
The play lasts about 15 minutes, followed by some Morris dancing for about the same period. At the end we can offer a dance for anyone to join in with if anyone would like to join in!
Furness Morris revived the tradition in 1965, and this year are only performing the play in local Furness communities.
