LDSM - Northern Chamber Orchestra

LDSM - Northern Chamber Orchestra

In a festival full of celebration and commemoration, LDSM is delighted to mark the close of the NCO‘s 50th year in our own opening concert. From the pomp and pageantry of Handel‘s music for King George I‘s barge being rowed on the Thames, we move to a poignant work originally written by Sir John Manduell in commemoration of Christopher Rowland, himself an important figure in LDSM‘s history. Reworked at the request of Kent Nagano from quartet to full strings, it now serves as a homage to Sir John, whose generous support and enthusiasm has benefitted LDSM enormously since its inauguration. Leading Irish soprano Ailish Tynan comes to LDSM for the first time (see also her recital on Tue 31st), and her effervescent character ideally suits Mozart‘s popular motet. We also include a little-known Mozart aria that highlights this year‘s featured instrument in our festival programmes, the bassoon: it is a reworking from Ilia‘s aria ‘Se il padre perdei‘ in Idomeneo. Ambleside-based international bassoonist Ursula Leveaux will play the obbligato part.

On entering Ulverston from the A590, drive straight on past Booths supermarket on your left and through a set of pelican traffic lights. At the next roundabout take the fourth exit onto Brewery Street. Turn left into the Brewery Street car park. Walk up Market Street and turn left up Brogden Street. At the top of the street turn right and then first left, and the Coronation Hall is situated behind the statue of Laurel and Hardy on County Square.

Less than a mile from Ulverston Station.
