Creative Sandblasting

Creative Sandblasting

Details

This intensive one-day course with Reuben Allonby. Reuben completed a three year apprenticeship with our retired Master Glass Engraver and brings a creative and precise aesthetic to this art form. He will assist you in bringing your drawings, photographs or patterns to life. This course is suitable for beginners or people wishing to extend their skills especially engraving with different depths to create a three dimensional quality.

The sandblasting process relies on the creative application of hand-cut stencils to the surface of the glass to form a resist to protect the glass from the abrasive action of the sand-blasting process. This enables your designs and drawings to be etched into the glass surface.

Whilst a relatively low-tech process the creative possibilities of sandblasting are huge, limited only by your imagination! It is not necessary to be a great artist to benefit from this course - rather a steady hand, patience and a creative vision will serve you best. Reuben will introduce you to the tools-of-the-trade, covering the safety aspects and then through practical demonstrations guide you through a series of exercises to familiarise you with the process. You are then free to develop your own designs using our state-of-the-art sandblaster; this may include images, patterns or text, for translation onto a beautiful piece of lead crystal hand-made in the factory.

Should you prefer you may experiment with your own glasses, bottles or jam-jars (without labels) for practice before moving to lead crystal. Additional glass vessels, tumblers and bowls suitable for engraving are available to purchase on the day should you have a grand project in mind. Please note this course requires the use of scalpels. Materials, tools and health & safety equipment are provided.

Notes

Cumbria Crystal is a fully working factory. Visitors are welcome to watch the artisans at work. It should be noted that we cannot guarantee what they will be making on any day. Factory staff are generally unable to stop what they are doing to talk to guests. However shop staff are very happy to talk visitors through the processes.
