Christmas Baubles: Glassblowing

Christmas Baubles: Glassblowing

Blowing a lead crystal Christmas bauble is a fantastically exciting and educational experience for almost anyone.

Whilst these are regularly available throughout the year they were so popular last Christmas that additional opportunities have been created to meet the anticipated demand this year.

No experience is necessary and Clare, the instructor, will guide you through every step of the process.

Clare will first demonstrate how coloured glass baubles are made and talk through the processes involved. You will then be invited to select the colours you would like to use to decorate your bauble.
Once this is prepared your instructor will gather molten glass from the furnace on a ‘blowing iron’ and you will have the opportunity to apply the colour & form the glass.

After reheating the glass you will blow the bubble and use metal tools to finish & shape the bauble. You may have to blow a number of times to get the right size and shape. Clare will then apply a glass hook so your Christmas bauble can be hung from a tree or in a window.

Your glass needs to cool in a kiln overnight to prevent it shattering. Your creation will be available for collection the next day, or if you prefer we can arrange to have it posted to you.

Cumbria Crystal is a fully working factory. Visitors are welcome to watch the artisans at work. It should be noted that we cannot guarantee what they will be making on any day. Factory staff are generally unable to stop what they are doing to talk to guests. However shop staff are very happy to talk visitors through the processes.
