Walking Route

Winder might only be a small hill but its position directly behind Sedbergh gives it amazingly strong presence. Its wonderfully smooth flanks form a dramatic sculpted backdrop to the houses and lanes of Sedbergh making it feel like a proper mountain village. For a first ascent and a way of discovering what Sedbergh and the Howgill Fells have to offer the traverse of Winder cannot be bettered. Access is easy straight from the centre of the village and with a brisk walk up Howgill Lane you can be out on the open grassy fells steadily gaining height. Almost as soon as you start to climb an expansive range of views open out before you. As height is gained wide ranging views open out and you will be able to pick out the Lakeland fells to the west and the rolling upland of the Yorkshire Dales to the east. Best of all though when you reach the summit the secretive interior of the main Howgill Fells will reveal just enough of themselves to tempt you into further walking adventures.
