Colours of Cumbria - Andrew Burns Colwill

Colours of Cumbria - Andrew Burns Colwill

His painting techniques developed out of utilising affordable materials, recycling and reusing. Untreated canvases, curtain linings stretched over wooden frames and found and reused wood have become Andrew’s surfaces for his work adding interest and texture.
He is a regular in the Sedbergh area through his friend and fellow creative maker Dimitris of ‘The Silver Workshop’ at Farfield Mill. He loves visiting the area and is excited to returning to the Mill. “My work is predominately with mountains, waterfalls, trees, rocks and the rusty rivers that crisscross the landscape, sometimes disclosing a hidden world, a world not all of us can see.”
Andrew has led a colour life, following “an unruly childhood spent at the back of classrooms drawing and painting to keep him out of trouble” he put his artistic skills to good use painting scenic artwork for the BBC and backdrops for theatre companies. His self-confidence growing Andrew became an artist exhibiting and selling in his own right. However, his increasing emersion into his work became fuelled by addiction. He escaped to Greece to fight his demons and renew his spirt. Now back in the UK his work often reflects his passion for the environment and “the consequences of our actions if we do not look after our planet.”
