Whernside and Knoutberry Hill guided walk

Whernside and Knoutberry Hill guided walk

Details

Starting from the picture postcard village of Dent in the part of Cumbria that falls within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, we climb the mountain called Whernside and then on to Knoutberry Hill.

On this guided walk you will be in a small group of no more than six people plus your guide. We initially take a riverside path, and then head up onto moorland and onto Knoutberry Hill. On a clear day there are panoramic views from here down Dentdale, and we can explore the picturesque Whernside Tarns.

We then continue up the hillside to the summit of Whernside where we are likely to meet the crowds who who have walked up from the Ribblehead side of the mountain. If we are lucky we'll get fabulous views across the valley to the other two 'Yorkshire 3 Peaks', being Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent, and also down to the famous Ribblehead viaduct.

Our return route to Dent is slightly longer as we head downhill and onto High Pike, then we pick up a green lane known as Occupation Road which skirts around the hillside with far reaching views down Dentdale and to the range of hills known as The Howgills in the distance.

The walk is just over 12 miles/20km with approx 830 metres of ascent. The route could be quite wet and boggy in places and does involve some rough ground.

Proper hiking boots and outdoor clothing essential. Young people under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sorry no dogs.
