Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle

Details

This pink granite & sandstone castle dating from medieval times guards the strategic river crossings where the Lake District mountains tumble into the sea. The oldest part of the castle is thought to stand on Roman foundations and Muncaster is recognised as being in two World Heritage sites; the Lake District National Park and as the start of the Hadrianic Roman Frontier.
The castle boasts unrivalled views of the Western Lake District fells, described as “Gateway to Paradise” by John Ruskin. The views include Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain. Muncaster is full of treasures and bursting with history. Tales seem to ooze from every rough stone which fashion the castle walls. The castle is said to be haunted and some have claimed to have seen the ghost of Tom Fool roaming the corridors. Still cherished by the family who have inhabited Muncaster for over 800 years, the surrounding woodland gardens teem with wildlife & nurture exotic plants from around the world and especially the Himalayas. The fabulous Hawk & Owl Centre flies falcons, owls, hawks, eagles & vultures daily (in season) to enchant visitors with the majesty of these fascinating birds of prey.
