Explore the Lake District's eastern-most valley - Mardale - on quiet minor roads, passing through villages with evocative names such as Butterwick and Whale. You will see Hawes Water and its dam and learn more about how Mardale was flooded to provide water for Manchester. Refreshments will be available at the Haweswater Hotel to provide sustenance for the return loop.

Directions

Leave the M6 at Penrith, junction 40, and follow signs initially for Brough A66. At second roundabout follow signs for Shap A6. In Eamont Bridge turn right at mini-roundabout signed Pooley Bridge B5320. After about 1.5 miles fork left on minor road signed to Askham. On entering Askham public car park entrance is on left.
