Lowther Castle & Gardens

Lowther Castle & Gardens

Details

Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem.

Seventy years on from its demolition, Lowther Castle is now one of the most intriguing visitor attractions in the country. Dramatic ruins, gardens within gardens, an adventure playground to rival the best in the land. For visitors young and old (and four-legged), Lowther Castle offers plenty to enjoy.

Built at the turn of the 19th century and the third residence on this plot, Lowther Castle was a grand affair while its gardens were the envy of the north. But by 1957 the Castle was abandoned and left to become a ruin; and the gardens were lost to wilderness. Today, with new gardens, a huge adventure playground, fabulous café and shop, Lowther Castle is rapidly becoming one of the most intriguing and exciting visitor attractions in the country.

A place where children, adults, landscape devotees, flower-lovers and anyone looking for a wonderful and fun day out will find plenty to please.

Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome in all areas except the adventure playground.

Afternoon Tea in the Sculpture Gallery

The long haul in the afternoon between lunch and supper can now be bridged in considerable style within the lovely setting of the Sculpture Gallery at Lowther Castle. Delicious loose leaf teas, English sparkling wines, cakes, tarts, pastries, sandwiches and scones – all these can now be supped at leisure in the 19th century building, attached to Lowther Castle, that once housed a considerable collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.
