Sailing for Anyone

Sailing for Anyone

Sailing is a little bit magic it’s the art of diverting and redirecting air flows and water flows at the same time and the moment you get it just right the boat picks up and slides along. That makes it sound like its hard but in one day you will be able to scoop up the wind and control and feel like a seafarer.

Under the careful watch of our instructor you start with a ride-along getting to know what sailing feels like and the role of the crew before a quick briefing and hand over of the steering to you. After this skills are slowly added until you are the one in charge of the power, direction and balance of the boat.

Sometimes sailing is the most tranquil of sports silently drifting along and sometimes it can be a gripping ride on a fast moving, hard leaning monster of metal and plastic. Be assured though we can always slow and calm a boat down by making the sails smaller – we regret that we cannot unfortunately speed the wind up.

Sailing is a great sport for those with limited strength or mobility because you do not power the vessel (like in canoeing or cycling) instead you are redirecting natural flows with a few bits of rope and a stick. We can accommodate a whole range of needs.

Fees include: equipment, access fees, picnic lunch, instruction, hot showers and hot drinks. Bring a spare change of clothes and you are set for the day.

For those disabilities that require back and neck support: we have a specially adapted sailing canoe with wings to balance it while the seat keeps you upright and secure. The sailing canoe can be steered and sailed independently of any other person.
We have a range of sensory, communications and learning aids for a range of adventurers with disabilities
