Navigation and Mountain Safety

Navigation and Mountain Safety

Join George Fisher staff member, Paul, a qualified Mountain Leader and Keswick Mountain Rescue Team member for a taster session on navigation and mountain safety.

Details

The aim is to boost your personal confidence in using a map and compass to:

1. navigate safely (including in poor visibility / mist) and to relocate if lost
2. give your location to mountain rescue if you or your party are injured
3. plan a route suitable for the weather conditions, including escape routes
4. understand how a smartphone can help and when a GPS is more useful
(This is not a GPS training course, though, this is 'navigation without batteries').

Duration: half-day (9 am to 1 pm)

Location: start from the George Fisher store

Numbers: 6 per session (min 4) Please book in advance.

Level of fitness: average hill-walking (expect to cover approx. 5 miles / 8 Km)

Experience: suitable for a full range of abilities, from complete beginners to more advanced

Clothing: please come prepared for the outdoors (boots, waterproofs, snack, drinks, hat and gloves, etc).

Equipment: maps and compasses provided (so that you can try different ones to see which you prefer)

Other prerequisites: none. (We reserve the right to exclude anyone for reasons of safety)

Exclusions: No upper age limit, children under 18 are welcome with their parent or guardian

Go further: We may run GPS-specific sessions if there’s enough interest. You can always call in-store or contact us with any queries – we’re happy to help. GPS Training also offer a range of courses.

If there’s enough interest, we may run longer, more advanced, or bespoke navigation sessions in future, too. We thoroughly recommend the full range of courses offered by More Than Mountains.

We may have other sessions running if you can't make this one. Please check our events page.
