Spotlight on Martin Bloch

Spotlight on Martin Bloch

Reviews

    Details

A spotlight lecture by Peter Rossiter (artist, art historian and grandson of Martin Bloch) which will give an insight into the life and work of British based Jewish German émigré Martin Bloch (1883-1954).

Join us for this talk. A unique and extraordinary colourist, Bloch fled to London in 1934 from Berlin, where he had been at the height of his career.

His battle for recognition in Britain was disrupted by nine months of internment, and upon his release he painted blitzed London cityscapes. During the post-war years he painted the English countryside, and stayed in the countryside staying with his friend and fellow émigré artist Joseph Herman.

In 1947 Bloch became a British citizen, and from 1949 until his death in 1954 he taught at Camberwell school of Art, where he influenced a new generation of British painters.
