LDSM is delighted to present this Flemish chamber group, specialising in repertoire for the unusual combination of string quartet plus double bass, in its UK public concert début. One of its core repertoire works is Dvorák‘s glorious Quintet, dedicated ‘to my nation‘. The half-British, half French George Onslow was praised by Berlioz and Schumann and became known as the ‘French Beethoven‘. Kelly was a close friend of the poet Rupert Brooke and took part in his burial on Skyros; he composed the Elegy in Gallipoli while preparing for battle.

A generation later, Françaix composed his work in 1942 as a divertissement from the Nazi occupation of France. A member of the Magnard Wind Ensemble, Catriona carries the flag for this year‘s featured wind instrument, with tonight‘s concert as a curtain-raiser to her duo recital and première next week
