After whetting our appetite last Saturday, Ailish returns with a banquet tonight, taking advantage of the concert tomorrow morning to borrow two of the Magnard Wind Ensemble players to perform Schubert‘s two songs with obbligato wind parts. Auf dem Strom is a tribute to Beethoven, quoting from the ‘Eroica‘ just as Strauss does in our closing concert, and written in the manner of Adelaide (see Sat 4th lunchtime); its florid horn part is doubtless inspired by the accompaniment to Leonore‘s aria ‘Abscheulicher‘ in Fidelio (see Sat 4th afternoon). Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, Schubert‘s penultimate song, was written for Anna Milder, for whom Beethoven wrote the rôle of Leonore.

The programme also includes three settings of Irish writers by Barber, settings of Scott including the sublime Ave Maria, and Keats, marking the bicentenary of the great poet‘s walking tour of the Lake District.
