Museum of Lakeland Life

The typical evening meal of a Lakeland farmer would consist of meat or fish, seasonal fruits, vegetables, cheese, butter and bread, accompanied by home-brewed beer. Self-sufficiency was a the cornerstone of rural life and sheep’s milk was turned into butter or cheese, Clap Bread was made from a thin mixture of oatmeal and water ‘clapped’ flat between the hands and meat was preserved by salting or smoking for later consumption.

In contrast to this modest fare the Lake District has long been associated with more exotic delicacies such as Grasmere Gingerbread, Potted Charr and Damson Gin.

This display located on the Museum's street scene is timed to open in time for Kendal’s successful Festival of Food, and lets you feast your eyes as you learn about the food traditions of the Lake District and the stories that surround them.

Entry to display is included with museum admission.
