Grasmere

Grasmere

For many Grasmere is synonymous with the poet Wordsworth, who with his sister Dorothy made Dove Cottage his home for the most productive nine years of his life. During his time here his reputation as a poet grew, and the village became as famous as the poet himself. It was of course the landscape that inspired Wordsworth, and there is much landscape to take in. The Tour merely touches Grasmere village, before heading once more to the hills above. If time permits, a stop-over day here is well worthwhile.

Route Essentials

Walk Route: Grasmere - Patterdale

Duration: 3 - 4 hours

Miles: 8

Route Details

This stage of the walk heads quickly away from the hubbub of the village, escaping along a side road and up towards Helvellyn (to go via Helvellyn, take the alternative high-level route). It's a day out in the wilds, with efforts rewarded by views of some of England's highest peaks. Stock up on food and drink before leaving Grasmere, as there is nothing until you reach the Patterdale Hotel at the end of the stage.
