Allithwaite Running Club

Allithwaite Running Club

Details

The Allithwaite-8 is a running race over a variety of terrain. It showcases the excellent trail & cross-country running around the Cartmel peninsula from Allithwaite. It will take place on Saturday the 3rd of November 2018, and is covered by permit 18/398 from the Association of Running Clubs. The minimum age for participants will be 16 on race day.

The length of the race is 8 miles and the total ascent is about 950 feet. About 2/3 of the route will be off-road … wooded trail, field, fell, limestone pavement & racecourse. The remaining 1/3 will be short stretches of road to join the more-interesting bits. About the only sort of terrain we can’t promise is snow! We hope the highlight will be the ascent of Hampsfell in the 2nd half of the race. The route goes past a stone tower known as the hospice (at the summit) and along the ridge of the fell, with great views on a clear day. There’s a speedy descent to finish the race.

A drinks station will be provided halfway around. More refreshments will be available at the finish, as well as toilets/showers.

In early November we could have any weather, so runners should bring warm running clothing and waterproof body cover with them. Actual clothing requirements for the race will be confirmed at the race registration on race day. We’d recommend off-road shoes, whether trail or fell is up to you depending on the conditions!

Race HQ, registration and start/finish is at Allithwaite community centre, LA11 7QJ. Final registration is at 10.30, followed by a race briefing shortly afterwards. The start time is 11:00. Parking will be available very close to the community centre and directed in the village, but if several people from one club are coming it would be great if you’d share lifts please.

Prizes will be cash, beer and chocolate, including some spot prizes. The main prizes will be for male/female 1st, 2nd & 3rd, followed by subsidiary prizes for veteran age groups (men & women), as well as the 16-18 age group.

Map reference: SD 387766  Lat: 54.18239 Long: -2.93942

From the East (M6, J36), follow the A590 West, signposted towards Barrow-in-Furness. Shortly before Grange-over-sands, there is a large roundabout (at Meathop). The first exit from the roundabout is the B5277 … take that road, through Lindale, to Grange-over-sands. Continue through Grange, following signs for Allithwaite and the road climbs up a hill as it leaves Grange. The B5277 is then level as it enters the village of Allithwaite. After entering the village, follow the B5277 downhill, until a sharp bend left at a former pub named The Yakkers. There, take a right turn uphill. That road is known as The Square (leading to Church Rd.). Follow that uphill and go past Knipe’s timber yard on the right-hand side. The next building is the village post office. Quarry Lane is the narrow, right turn immediately after the post office.

From the West, use the A590, then leave that road following signs for Cartmel. Once in Cartmel, drive past the primary school on your left hand side, then past the village shop and Pig &Whistle pub on your right. Continue straight on and past Cartmel Priory high school on your left. Come to a cross roads and turn left, signposted for Allithwaite. Follow that road into Allithwaite. After entering the village, the road will head downhill past the village primary school and St. Mary’s Church. Shortly afterwards you’ll see the post office and Quarry Lane on your left.

Parking is available close to the venue and signposted in Allithwaite.
