The Gondoliers and their brides

The Gondoliers and their brides

Two Gondoliers, brothers Marco and Giuseppe choose their brides Gianetta and Tessa.

Staveley Amateur Operatic Society will be transporting audiences to sunny Venetian climes for Gilbert and Sullivan’s ever popular comic-operetta “The Gondoliers” where romance is afoot as two handsome gondoliers, brothers Marco and Giuseppe (Colin Delsey and John Reid) choose their brides. Following their wedding to Gianetta and Tessa (Rachael Lewis and Hannah Godden) they are surprised to learn that they are not in reality brothers and one of them is actually the heir to the throne of Barataria. Until it is resolved which is which, they are sent by The Grand Inquisitor, Don Alhambra (Graham Beevers), to Barataria to rule jointly. To complicate things, a Duke’s daughter, Casilda (Rebecca Chandler) is betrothed to marry whichever gent proves to be the King.
Other principals taking part include Peter Bowden and Sue Harrison (The Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro) and Angela-Lee Kennedy (Luiz) and they are well supported in song and dance by the ladies and gentlemen of the chorus.
Producer Hannah Godden puts her lively interpretation on Gilbert’s witty libretto and Musical Director David Tattersall conducts Sullivan’s delightfully varied compositions.
