Learn Illuminated Lettering – 2 Days

Learn Illuminated Lettering – 2 Days

Join Sarah Lace for a 2 day workshop in Illuminated Lettering, this workshop offers the opportunity to learn something of the history and origins about these art forms as we examine a range of styles from 6th Century Celtic through to the modern day; showing their development through time. Sarah will help with the design of your piece including simple techniques of constructing Celtic knotwork and spirals, decoration using rubrication and enhancing the piece with the use of watercolour and gold. This workshop aims to provide some basic skills and techniques which you can continue to develop and practice at home with easily available materials. Illumination is an endangered craft and appears on the Heritage Crafts Red List of Endangered Crafts for 2019 with only 11-20 people practising the skill in the UK.

For those of you who haven’t heard of Illuminated Lettering - the term illuminate comes from the Latin ‘illuminare’ which means ‘to light up’ and is essentially decorative calligraphy with the use of colour and gold in many different forms. Traditionally this was a religious subject practised in the monasteries with the application of gold leaf to a letter which reflects the light and makes the letter appear to glow. This letter would typically be the first on a manuscript page and borders or coloured images were then added to enhance the letter.

Sarah is a local artist with a background in fine art and design. In the last 3 years Sarah has begun to specialise in Illuminated Lettering and is mentored by experienced Illuminated Lettering artist, Patrick Corbett. With a keen interest in history, literature and art Sarah finds this medium combines all three and her love of Lake District heritage gives her continued inspiration.
