Secret Solway Guided Tours

Secret Solway Guided Tours

The Secret Solway full day guided tour leaves Carlisle (from just next to the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre in the city centre) at 10am and returns at approximately 4pm.

The Secret Solway guided tour travels through lovely rural villages and hamlets on the Cumbrian side of the Solway estuary. The tour visits important natural and built heritage sites, which reveal the significance over the centuries of the Solway landscape and history for the people and the wildlife living in the area.

In the morning the tour takes a scenic route through the Solway plains to visit a fascinating medieval church which has royal connections and a fortified pele tower, view different wildlife habitats and explore an ancient Cistercian abbey with a turbulent past.

Lunch will be in Silloth, a Victorian seaside town once dubbed the ‘Cumbrian Riviera’. There are a range of cafes and food outlets in Silloth, to suit different dietary requirements, where visitors can buy their lunch.

In the afternoon the tour takes visitors through attractive coastal areas to see the remains of some of the Solway World War and Cold War defences, a traditionally constructed 'Clay Dabbin' cottage, the last remnants of a rail viaduct which crossed the Solway to Scotland, and to visit a small seaside village which was the main port for Carlisle, and an important transport hub offering a stepping off point for people leaving the UK for a new life in Canada and America. The tour is also an opportunity to learn about haafnet fishing, an activity that was introduced by the Vikings to the Solway Firth, now the only place in the UK where this type of fishing still takes place.

The Solway is rich in wildlife, including many rare birds and insects, which visit and live on the estuary muds or the unique wetland areas. If visitors are really lucky they may see a hare, deer, seals or even a porpoise swimming up the Solway estuary. Binoculars can be helpful for seeing the wildlife.

The Secret Solway tour also includes stories about the local inhabitants and those who have visited the area including Romans, kings, the fearsome Reivers, monks, smugglers, elopers, fishermen, drovers, and a mysterious spacemen.
