Route Details

This route will take you anti-clockwise around the lake.

1. Start from the Bridge Hotel in the centre of the Buttermere village. Take the lane on the left hand side as you look at the front of the hotel, bear left into the lane beside the Fish Inn. This lane turns left, goes through a gate, bears right through another gate, and comes out at the corner of the National Trust field beside Buttermere (the lake) through another gate. Turn right and follow the path along the field edge to the bridge. Cross and bear left, to another bridge and gate. Go through and bear left to follow the lake shore.

2. Continue along the lake shore. At the end of the lake, in just over 2.0km (1.2 miles) turn left through the gate, crossing Peggy's Bridge, and into the lane up to Gatesgarth Farm. Keep left through the yard, separated by a fence, up to the road.

3. At the road turn left, up a slight incline, following the road as it goes round to the right. Head down to the lake shore, where a rough path follows the shore line just below the road. Bear left following the path along the top of the shingle bank heading round the promontory and Crag Wood. Cross the bridge, go through the gate and bear left. Proceed through the narrow tuunnel which has been fashioned through the rock next to the lake shore.

4. As you near the end of the lake, proceed through the gate and bear left to go through another gate and continue round the lake shore back to the National Trust's field. Turn right, head through the gate and back into the lane to the village.
