Operating beyond the edge: Safety Critical Systems

Operating beyond the edge: Safety Critical Systems

Operating beyond the edge: Safety critical systems and human factors

Details

Advanced technology continues to be introduced into moving platforms in the air, at sea, on the ground and in space. In some areas, such as flight control systems, it is argued that automating processes results in a higher reliability system but demonstrating safety with such systems is an increasingly expensive process, where residual uncertainty still exists within the complete performance envelope.

Professor Nancy Leveson, the keynote speaker, has described safe systems as the imposition of constraints and this is only possible when the context of use is comprehensively known. Often mishaps can occur when the designed system and the model of the world mismatch, such as in the Ariane V accident

Mishaps can also occur where the control systems transition from automated operation and back into manual operation, leaving the operator to rapidly reconstruct a mental mode of the operating context. It has been argued that the allocation of function, between machine intelligence and human, implies a human vulnerability or weakness, dismissing the creative strength that operators can evidence when required. For example, Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III's Miracle on the Hudson.

This meeting will consider the difficulties in developing technology and in creating a synergistic blend of artificial and human intelligence in advanced moving platforms.
