Compared to the rest of his oeuvre, performances of Beethoven‘s songs are a rarity – all the more surprising given that he is acknowledged as having composed the first true song cycle in his An die ferne Geliebte – written in 1816, the year he gained custody of his nephew Karl. This lunchtime recital rectifies this omission, setting the cycle in the context of English songs (including a Shakespeare setting) written by Haydn shortly after Beethoven‘s period of study with him, and Adelaide, Beethoven‘s best-known song, written as Haydn was penning those works. The programme is completed by two of the many sets of piano variations Beethoven wrote – the A major Variations were composed around the same time as his Op.9 trios (see Wed 1st and Mon 6th) which were dedicated to his patron Count von Browne: these variations were dedicated to the Countess.
