For our closing concert LDSM is thrilled to bring NYSO for its first visit, as the culmination of its summer course. Founded in 1995, NYSO is one of the UK‘s most prestigious training organisations for young string players up to the age of 21. Pärt‘s Cantus – the most popular orchestral work by the world‘s most performed living composer – forms a bridge between Britten‘s 1943 gem and Strauss‘s 1945 elegy to a world devastated by war. The concerto spot highlights Mendelssohn‘s rarely-heard first concerto, written – astonishingly – when he was 13. Revived in the 1950s by Yehudi Menuhin, it has all the hallmarks of the genius which flooded his mature repertoire. To bring the curtain down, while we cannot promise a fortnight of sunshine, with Tchaikovsky‘s Serenade, all ends radiantly.
