In this illustrated hour-long introductory talk, leading Beethoven expert Colin Beeson will guide us through the social, political and historical background to early 19th-century Vienna and Beethoven’s milieu in general, how he was seen by his peers in the press and musical world, his relationship with patrons, the Heiligenstadt Testament and the associated health and family pressures, with reference to contemporary sources.
