“What a Gem of a Hotel”

Tucked away off the main roads and yet less than two minutes out of the door you are in the centre of Ambleside, ideal location. Small car park available in a notoriously difficult village for parking! Greeted by the very amiable Matthew, who showed us around and couldn't have been any more welcoming. Lovely room (four poster comfortable) bed, plenty of space. And a fridge! Usually feel demonised in most hotels for daring to want a drink in your room, not here, they even provide proper glasses and an ice machine, not to mention extra supplies of tea/coffee etc if you run out in your room. The small pool, hot tub and sauna in the ground floor were a very welcome addition when you come back from your walk. Breakfast was lovely, freshly cooked to order by more friendly staff, selection of cereals, fresh fruit and yoghurts to help your self to plus fresh juice. The hotel is a lovely old building (don't expect modern) with gorgeous stained windows and the feel of a loved, lived in, country manor. Only reason for four instead of five stars is that our towels weren't changed and it is difficult to get the bathrobes dry after using the pool ready for next use- there is a heated towel rail in the bathroom but we used this for our swim stuff and towels. Saying that, Matthew had said on arrival that if we needed fresh towels or anything to just let them know, so to be fair that's what we should have done. However, I prefer to dry and re-use in the interests of reducing laundry so would have preferred more drying facility in the room. This is a very small thing in an otherwise wonderful stay and I would not hesitate in recommending it to others. Found on the Go Lakes website. Tip, the hotel offers winter discount offers so you can try for yourself at a reduced cost, however we thought that for all the facilities on offer our price was very competitive. Can't wait to return!

    Details

A charming Victorian house, carefully converted and quietly tucked away in own wooded grounds in central Ambleside. Formerly used as the vicarage for the parish of St Mary's, it overlooks Rothay Park and is tucked away from traffic noise. There is ample free car parking within the grounds. Ideal base for exploring the surrounding fells or boating on lovely lakes. Fishing, riding, golfing and sailing are just a few of the facilities available nearby. There is a spacious and comfortable lounge available for guests' use and a small snooker table. We have our own heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, hot tub, sun lounge and roof top terrace.
