It is no accident that the key of Mendelssohn's last major work is the same as Beethoven's Op.95, heard from last Sunday, Rachmaninov's Trio, to be heard tomorrow morning, and Shostakovich's Op.122, to be heard next Saturday: its sense of anguish and foreboding reflects his torment over the death of his beloved sister Fanny. The Quartet is joined by Tom Poster in one of Shostakovich's best-loved works, which immediately earned him both state and public appreciation - typically, he immediately donated the cash that came with the 1940 Stalin Prize for this work to impoverished Muscovites.
