A wealth of opportunities awaits you when you take a ride on the Coniston Rambler. Be an early bird from Kendal or start at Ambleside, looking out for glorious woodland, small rivers and stone bridges backed by Lakeland fells. Enter the picturesque village of Hawkshead where you can sample the delightful gift and tea shops dotted amongst the various small alleyways. The Beatrix Potter Gallery is also found here. From the village, a surprising detour takes you over Hawkshead Hill (from here it's a 25 minute walk to the famous beauty spot called Tarn Hows). The views from the hill are amazing - there is a wonderful vista of Coniston Water as you wind down the hill to the grand entrance of your final destination - the striking image of Coniston Old Man towering above the village. There is plenty to occupy you here - a visit to the Ruskin Museum to discover the art of John Ruskin, the daring of Donald Campbell and the fascinating story of the copper mines. You can also visit Ruskin's home, Brantwood, by steam gondola or electric launch, climb the Old Man or relax at a lakeside café before jumping on the bus back to Ambleside.
