Sympathetic conversion of a 2-storey sandstone barn offering 2 or 3 bedroom accommodation, each with own en-suite or bathroom. Cottages have been inverted to enjoy the far reachng views of the Lakeland hills and Pennines from the living space. The living areas are open plan, with log burning stoves and fully-fitted kitchens which include oven, dishwasher and fridge. Master bedrooms include en suites along with king-size iron frame beds with quality mattresses ensuring a restful night.

Outside there is space to sit out and relax and enjoy the views and sun set over Blencathra and other Lakeland hills or peer down the uncovered 40ft well discovered in the conversion, made safe for those peering too far! Blencarn is situated in the Eden valley a short distance of the A66 enjoying peaceful surroundings away from the hustle of daily life. The village has a fly-fishing lake where day catch tickets can be bought Apr-Oct. Alternatively you can enjoy leisurely walks in and around the village or visit the local art studio.

The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Hadrian's Wall are all within easy reach allowing you to enjoy stunning scenery as you travel through the area. The North Pennines provide interesting routes for cyclists, motorists and those in search of interesting drives with Alston some 1900ft climb and Cross Fell at 890m for those with mountain bikes or a thirst for hill walking.

We welcome classic and sports car owners looking for secure garaging and the facility to carry out daily checks and running repairs or cleaning. Penrith and Appleby are close by offering traditional shopping with a good supply of local pubs close by serving locally sourced food on the menu. Available all year round with flexible options for short breaks available.

Cleanliness - we stated 2 as there were a number of kitchen items that needed washing before they could be used on our arrival.

Staff service - we stated 4 as information was provided before our arrival and we were advised about any queries promptly. We were also advised who to contact should there been an issue whilst we were away.

Value for money - we stated 3 as we felt the cost for 1 week was slightly high, although we found the break very enjoyable

Location - we stated 4 as we now are aware that most tourist areas of the lakes are around 1 hour away. Now that we are aware of this the need for your own transport is a must. As the village has a number of windy roads additional time is required to get to destinations.

Services and facilities - we stated 3 as we were advised that we could use laundry facilities at the venue. However we noticed that a token payment was requested to use these facilities. As this wasn't stated clearly on the website, we were disappointed with this.

Additional smoke alarms seemed to be set too high as on a number of occasions the alarms were going off when candles were lite

Our first less than 5 star review ......... please read the others as this does seem to be a one - off and a bit unfair. To be honest really surprised by this review as separate email from guests said they had a very relaxed and comfortable week and have enquired about booking 2 further weeks later in the year? Fully take on board the kitchen utensil issue but never had this before (things normally go through the dishwasher) and to mark the whole cottage as 2 does seem harsh? The other issues are relatively minor and whilst it does take an hour to get to Windermere you can get to other areas in the Lakes in about 20 minutes....... if you want to be in Windermere then stay in Windermere - then raise issues about value for money!! No problem with issues being raised but to prefer reviews to be a bit more balanced than this seems to be.
